Towing Made Simple: Know What Your Vehicle Can Handle

Before you hit the road in your dream caravan, it’s important to know if your vehicle is up to the job. Understanding your towing capacity isn’t just about performance - it’s about safety, legality, and protecting your investment.

At Kokoda, we believe that going off-grid shouldn’t start with guesswork. So let’s break it down.

What Is Towing Capacity, Really?

Towing capacity is the maximum weight your vehicle can safely tow. Every car, ute or SUV has its own limit, and exceeding that number can not only damage your vehicle but may also breach caravan towing regulations in Australia.

Two key numbers to know:

  • Braked Towing Capacity: The max your vehicle can tow with trailer brakes (most caravans fall into this category).
  • Tow Ball Load Limit: The downward weight the caravan applies to your tow ball, often around 10% of the van’s loaded weight.

Before choosing your caravan, check your vehicle’s specs and compare them to the caravan’s ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) and GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass).

Matching Car to Caravan

Whether you're towing a caravan with a sedan or SUV you need to know your limits. For example, many popular family utes in Australia offer up to 3.5-tonne towing, perfect for a Kokoda Force 2 or M.I.A  Family models. But smaller vehicles may only handle lighter options like our Platoon 2 and Digger 2 in the Couples Range.

Why It Matters

Exceeding your towing limit isn’t just unsafe - it’s illegal. And if you’re involved in an accident while towing over the legal limit, your insurance may not cover you. That’s a risk not worth taking.

At Kokoda, we design caravans that balance adventure and weight distribution, offering options to suit vehicles with 2.5T, 3T, and 3.5T capacities. Whether you’re planning short weekend escapes or the big lap, we’ll help match the right van to your ride.

Not Sure Where to Start?

Tip: Always refer to your vehicle’s owner manual or speak to a qualified mechanic before making a towing decision.
